The Short List: Hair That Looks Like You Tried (Without Trying)

The Short List: Hair That Looks Like You Tried (Without Trying)

Hair care has the same problem as beard care: too many products, too many promises, not enough clarity on what actually matters.

The good news is the baseline is simple. Three products cover almost everything — shampoo, conditioner, and one styling product if you want it. That's the whole system.

Shampoo: wash it, don't wreck it

Shampoo cleans your scalp and hair. That's the job. The mistake most guys make is washing too often — daily shampooing strips natural oils and can leave hair dry, dull, or prone to frizz. Two to three times a week is enough for most hair types. If your hair gets oily fast, you can go more often. If it runs dry, less.

What to look for: something sulfate-free if your hair is color-treated or on the dry side. Otherwise, a straightforward formula without a lot of extras does the job fine.

Conditioner: the step that actually changes how your hair feels

If you're skipping conditioner, your hair is telling you. Conditioner restores moisture, reduces frizz, and makes hair easier to manage and style. Use it every time you shampoo — focus on the ends, not the scalp.

For guys with short hair: yes, you still need it. A lightweight conditioner takes thirty seconds and makes a real difference in texture.

One styling product: pick your format

This is where personal preference takes over, but the principle is the same — pick one and use it consistently.

  • Pomade — shine and hold, works well for slicked or structured styles
  • Matte paste or clay — natural finish, good for textured or casual looks
  • Cream — light hold, works well for longer or wavy hair
  • Gel — strong hold, best for very short hair or specific styles

You don't need all of them. Pick the finish you want (shiny vs. matte) and the hold level you need (light vs. strong), and find one product that hits both. Done.

The routine

Shampoo two or three times a week. Condition every wash. Apply styling product to damp or dry hair depending on the look. Under five minutes total.

Next week: shaving and aftershave — why the post-shave step matters more than most guys think.
